Map
I used a map of the Mississippi from the mid 1700’s as the basis for the map on this horn. I took out a section from St. Louis to New Madrid and added several rivers and other features that the client asked for.

Map of the Mississippi
and the Ozark PlateauHere’s some detail of the map I put on the horn.
-
Cameo
There is a 1 inch cameo in the base band. In it is a rendering of the client’s log cabin in the woods which was taken from a photograph he supplied me. Over that is the legend “My Ozark Mountain Home”.
-
Base Plug and Staple
I turned this base plug from cypress which was recovered from a building constructed in 1909. I installed a sterling silver staple in it to complete the horn.
-
Longhunter
On the inside curve I did an image of a longhunter superimposed on the lettering of the Ozark Plateau.
-
Engrailing Text
Around the throat of the horn just below the engrailing I engraved a band. Inside the band is the client’s name and the year of his birth.
-
Neck & Spout
The throat was cut down and flows into two rings where the strap will attach. It then steps down to a fluted collar and finally to a faceted spout. I used an ebony fiddle peg for a stopper.
-
The Fluted Spout
The spout is faceted and has a fluted collar around it.
