The Moler Horn
This horn was commissioned as a gift for a man from his wife. She wanted his initials on the horn and images of pheasants and quail. It was finished in November 2009.
Click on the small picture to enlarge it. Once you are in the slide view mode you can use the arrows to see another picture. The out side curve of the horn had images of Pheasants in flight with a barn and lone tree in the background.
The larger of two two pheasants rising up over a fence line.
On the inside curve of the horn I did a scene of quail flying and a cameo of three California Quail. The cameo is decorated by an oak leaves and acorns design. Here you also see the engrailing and the engraving just below it.
Here’s a larger view of the inside curve of the horn showing a flock of quail rising in flight amid the pines.
The client did not want a name on the horn. Preferring to have a monogram instead. Since the body of the horn is covered with illustrations I inlaid a medallion of artificial Ivory in the turned elm butt plug and engraved a monogram of my design with the initials RBM. I finished the horn with a sterling silver staple.
The inside curve of the horn shows a scene of quail rising from the grass and flying into the trees. You can also see the base band which is a simple, elegant scroll.
Here you can see some of the quail and the whole horn.
I did this cameo of a pheasant on the ground from a photograph. The cameo window is decorated with a maple leaves and pheasant feathers.
The throat of the horn was engrailed. It stepped to a smooth neck, a double ring, a sort of flat tulip, another ring and a faceted spout. It was dyed and finished with an ebony fiddle peg stopper.
